After Glastonbury Announced That They Wouldn’t Be Screening An Important Soccer Match, One Direction Star Louis Tomlinson Took Matters Into His Own Hands

“Louis from One Direction popping to Argos to get a TV so the Glastonbury crowd could watch the Euros is exactly the type of patriotism I’m interested in," one proud Brit tweeted.

As you’re probably aware, the UK’s biggest music festival, Glastonbury, took place at the weekend, with headline performances from Dua Lipa, Coldplay, and SZA.

And one celeb who chose the latter is former One Direction star Louis Tomlinson, who has earned the title "the hero of Glastonbury” following his admirable dedication to watching an important soccer match while camping with his sister Lottie Tomlinson and friends.

But soccer-obsessed Louis was not prepared to miss the game, and rather than arrange a viewing for just him and his group, he decided to create an impromptu screening for anybody who wanted to watch in the middle of the festival.

According to the Guardian, Louis left the festival on Sunday morning and went to a nearby Argos — a popular retail chain in the UK — to buy a TV, generator, and dongle to hotspot internet data from his cellphone to screen the match.

The closest Argos to Glastonbury’s Worthy Farm venue is just an 18-minute drive away.

In pictures from the screening, the amount of effort put into making the setup work is evident. The TV has been securely taped to a stand, with the stand’s legs each placed into a bucket of rocks for stability. The entire contraption was then put into a cart with wheels.

Speaking to the Guardian, Louis suggested that there had been some trial and error as he revealed that the TV that was used was actually the second TV he bought as the first one cracked.

Thankfully, the seriously tense match was totally worth the effort, with England equalizing 1–1 against Slovakia with just 86 seconds to go. This pushed the game into extra time, where England quickly scored another goal and secured their spot in Saturday’s quarter-final.

Once the game began, a huge crowd gathered to watch it live at the festival — with many not even realizing that Louis was among them, let alone the person behind it all.

“Obsessed with the person who brought a full size telly to Glastonbury for the footie,” one popular tweet reads alongside a POV photo.

Another festival-goer, TV critic Scott Bryan, shared his own picture as he tweeted: “Incredible that someone bought a full size television to Glastonbury to watch the England game.”

Scott then asked in a follow-up: “Sorry why are lots of people saying it was Louis from One Direction?”

Speaking to the Guardian ahead of extra time, Louis joked that he initially wasn’t planning on coming forward, saying: “I wasn’t going to take credit for it if we lost in normal time, but now that we’ve equalized I’m happy to.”

And after the match, visibly thrilled Louis told the BBC that he was “made up” with the result. Explaining how he pulled the whole thing off, Louis added: “We brought a TV in, very Glasto, in some stones and a little stand. It was a little bit touch and go at times; the signal kept going in and out, but luckily, we got there, and we pulled it off.”

Lottie also shared a behind-the-scenes TikTok of Louis leading the charge in setting up the TV — as well as the crowd’s reaction to England’s dramatic win.

Needless to say, the whole thing has been branded “iconic” by people online, with one person tweeting: “Louis from One Direction popping to Argos to get a TV so the Glastonbury crowd could watch the Euros is exactly the type of patriotism I’m interested in."
