The BET Awards Just Paid Tribute To O.J. Simpson But Snubbed “Brooklyn Nine-Nine” Star Andre Braugher, And People Are Mad

The 2024 BET Awards have caused a stir after O.J. Simpson was included in the “In Memoriam” segment of Sunday night’s show.

O.J. died in April at age 76, and was described as a “Former NFL Player” in the montage. 


However, O.J. is arguably best known for being accused of killing his ex-wife, Nicole Brown Simpson, and her friend Ronald Goldman in 1994.


What followed was an incredibly high-profile televised car chase as the police pursued O.J., and a trial that saw the star ultimately get acquitted of the murder charges in 1995.

His inclusion in the BET tribute seemingly caught those in attendance off-guard, with the Hollywood Reporter stating that the audience had been applauding to all of the images shown on screen, but noticeably fell silent when O.J.’s picture appeared.

Those watching at home were also surprised by BET’s decision to include him, with one person tweeting: “OJ Simpson in memoriam for anything is WILD no matter how you slice it.”

“ain't no way BET decided to honor OJ Simpson,” one more wrote. Somebody else added: “The OJ Simpson tribute is wild.”

Another tweeted: “I know they did not just include oj simpson……” while somebody else wrote: “Ngl.. I nearly changed the channel once OJ Simpson popped up on the screen during that in memoriam at the Bet Awards 2024.”

Others were all the more disappointed by O.J.’s inclusion when they noticed that beloved Brooklyn Nine-Nine star Andre Braugher was seemingly snubbed by the network.

The Emmy-winning actor died in December at age 61 following a brief illness. 


Reacting to him not being included in the segment, one person tweeted: “You put O.J. SIMPSON in the ‘In Memoriam’ slideshow, but not Andre Braugher?!?! Really, #BETAwards? REALLY?!?!”


“including oj simpson in your in memoriam tribute but not andre braugher is nuts bet,” another viewer agreed.


Somebody else asked: “Did I miss Andre Braugher in the memorial portion?”
